Agnes E. Westra, age 102 of Barryton went to be with the Lord, Sunday June 25, 2006 at Spectrum Health Skilled Nursing Care in Reed City. She was born in Saranac December 6, 1903 to Eugene and Daisy (Sargent) Earle. Agnes moved to Barryton with her family when she was twelve. She married Henry J. Westra in Lansing April 17, 1920. In 1936 Mr. Westra passed away and Agnes took over the role of father for her family. Agnes attended the Barryton Church of Christ for a number of years making sure her children had a Christian upbringing. She was a dedicated, strict and caring mother to her children, one grandson and two other children. Always a hard worker she grew up working on the farm where she loved to ride bareback. Mrs. Westra worked at Tice's Dressing Plant in Barryton and enjoyed 25 years as a cook (working with her sister Florence) at the Barryton Dairy Bar, currently William's Caf. Agnes retired at age 75. An accomplished seamstress she made clothing that looked as if it came out of a catalog. Mrs. Westra was an excellent cook, enjoyed embroidering, knitting and making quilts for all of her children. Agnes took to reading as soon as "staying busy" was not an option. She was a strong woman and never lost her enthusiasm for life. Agnes will be dearly missed by her children: Wayne Westra of Allen Park Juanita Ballard of Reed City Patricia Potter of Reed City and Luella (Harmon) Potter of Barryton 6 Grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren, 1 step granddaughter-in-law, 15 Great-grandchildren, 7 step great-grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren, 7 step great great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband Agnes was preceded in death by two grandchildren Bobby Luce and Debbie Torrey, one step grandson Franklin M. Potter, one brother Ralph Earle and two sisters; Wilma VanSickle and Florence Moore, two sons-in-law; Franklin R. Potter and Garnet T. Ballard. Visitation will take place Wednesday the 28th from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Thursday from 12:00 p.m. (noon) until 1:00 p.m. at the Daggett Funeral Home in Barryton. Funeral Services will take place Thursday June 29th at 1:00 p.m. at the Daggett Funeral Home with Randy Piatt officiating. The family asks that memorial contributions be made to Spectrum Health Skilled Nursing Care, who took excellent care of Agnes or the Barryton Church of Christ.
